LAGOS, NIGERIA – September 26, 2026 – The League of Online Publishers and Editors (LOPE) has elected a new five-member executive, with Mrs. Favour Benson emerging as Chairman to lead the association into a new phase.

The election was held on September 4, 2026, at the LOPE General Meeting, where all five candidates emerged unopposed and were subsequently endorsed by members of the association.

Other members of the new executive include the General-Secretary, Maureen Obire; Financial Secretary, Lillian Azuh; Treasurer, Angela Davies; and Welfare Officer/Provost, Shammah Ogbodo.

The newly elected officers were subsequently sworn into office by the association’s lawyer, Barrister Olakunle Afolabi, who also signed and sealed the relevant documents.

In her inaugural address, Benson thanked LOPE members for the confidence reposed in the new leadership and pledged to build on the experience and lessons of LOPE’s first tenure.

The new LOPE Chairman identified transparency, accountability, active participation and stronger commitment among members as priorities of the new administration.

In her words, “This is a responsibility we accept with humility and strong commitment to the growth of Nigeria’s digital media industry.

“We will work with our members and stakeholders to promote professionalism, collaboration, innovation and sustainable development across the sector,” Benson said.

The Favour Benson-led administration is also expected to review relevant provisions of LOPE constitution and introduce professional media training and other capacity-building initiatives for members of the association.

Members at the meeting described the new administration as “LOPE’s second lap” and called for greater unity, effective communication, tolerance and collective support in advancing the objectives of the association.

While reaffirming her commitment to integrity and democratic leadership, Benson urged members to take greater responsibility for the growth and success of the association.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has intercepted illicit drugs with a combined street value of more than N3.4 billion.

The seizures include over 1.3 million pills of tramadol and other opioids as well as about 6,000 kilograms of cannabis strains.

Operatives also arrested a fake police officer and a mechanic who used his workshop as a drug storage front.

In one of the major busts, NDLEA officers intercepted 1,200 parcels of Canadian Loud weighing 603.75 kilograms, valued at about N1.81 billion, at Tin Can Island Port in Lagos.

Along the Benin-Onitsha Expressway in Asaba, Delta State, operatives arrested 49-year-old Innocent Ekpe on September 16.

He was found with 292.48 kilograms of skunk hidden in a Toyota Sienna bus. Investigation showed Ekpe had been impersonating a Deputy Superintendent of Police named Godwin Emeka, using a forged identity card to pass checkpoints. An accomplice, Nduka Joseph, was also arrested.

In Edo State, officers raided an auto-repair workshop on Agbor Road, Benin City, and arrested 45-year-old Matthew Ossai.

He allegedly used the workshop as a front for storing drugs. Recoveries included Canadian Loud and methamphetamine.

Additional operations across Lagos, Niger, Ondo, Gombe, Imo and the FCT yielded further seizures of skunk and opioids.

In Ondo, operatives destroyed 5,000 kilograms of skunk on a farm. The agency also reported the arrest of two teenagers found with AK-47 rifles, a pistol and ammunition during the sweeps.

The NDLEA described the coordinated operations as significant breakthroughs in the fight against drug trafficking. Suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
